The Westport Weston Family Y is in danger.

The Family Y must move to a new facility at its Mahackeno campsite. If it doesn’t, it will be forced to close its doors.

The Y sold its Post Road Building at the end of 2006. Some people in town claim this was a political stunt. It wasn’t. The Y simply cannot afford to operate the 85-year-old building.

Now, after the Family Y received a series of approvals, a tiny group of people is trying to prevent the Family Y from creating a new center on land that it has owned since 1942.

If these naysayers succeed, the Y could go out of business by 2010 and all of Westport will lose.

Come on Westport. Be Smart! Learn the facts before it’s too late:

  1. BulletThe Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection gave tentative permission to the Westport Weston Family Y to build a waste-water treatment facility at Mahackeno (5.10.2006).

  2. BulletThe Westport Flood and Erosion Control Board approved the Family Y’s application to build at Mahackeno (10.12.2006).

  3. BulletThe Westport Conservation Commission approved the Family Y’s application to build at Mahackeno (4.6.2007).

  4. BulletConnecticut DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy gave final approval for a waste-water treatment facility, following an administrative appeal (8.3.2007).

  5. BulletThe Westport Representative Town Meeting upheld earlier commission approvals (8.7.2007).

  6. BulletThe Westport Planning and Zoning Commission will vote in 2008 on the Family Y’s application to build at Mahackeno.
