Dear neighbor,

 

As you may know, the Planning & Zoning commission is on the verge of approving the Y’s application to build its huge new facility at Camp Mahackeno.  The commission is scheduled to vote next Thursday, Oct. 23, to give the application its final approval.

                                                                          

Here’s what you need to know about the P&Z decision:

 

1. •We have 15 days after the decision is published to file an appeal.
   

2. •If we do not file within those 15 days, the opportunity is lost.
   

3. •Our advisors tell us we have a real chance of overturning the P&Z decision.
   

4. •To finance the appeal, we are beginning an intense fundraising effort.
   

5. •Because of the short time frame within which we can file the appeal, we need to raise our funds quickly – we have set a deadline of October 30.
   

 

What happens if we do not appeal the P&Z decision?

 

1. •The approval will stand and the Y’s new facility will go forward as planned.
   

2. •The new facility will result in environmental harm to our land and waterways, pollution, deforestation, sprawl, excruciating traffic jams and a loss of vibrancy in downtown Westport, as well as increased infrastructure costs, paid for by town residents. 
   

 

 

We believe it will require a substantial sum to continue our efforts to stop the Y’s project by filing the appeal and seeing the process through.  Our goal is to raise the lion’s share of these funds by Oct. 30 so we can plan the appeal process accordingly.

 

 

How can you help?

 

1. •Contribute financially to the appeal.  We realize that these are difficult financial times and fully appreciate any and all support you are able to give -- every dollar counts. 
   

2. •Please make checks out to Y Downtown and send c/o Indy Goldberg, 12 Rice’s Lane, Westport 06880.*  It would be ideal for contributions to be sent by October 30.
